A deep analysis report titled "Stage-2 Deep Analysis" has been released recently, but instead of delivering sharp tactical insights, it ended with numerous "N/A - insufficient data" entries. This reflects a worrying reality in Vietnamese leagues: the football data foundation remains too primitive.
In modern football, data plays a key role. From measuring players' running distance, successful passes, pressing indexes to xG (expected goals), all help coaches make accurate decisions. However, in V.League, these numbers are rarely made public. Many clubs still rely on the intuition of individual coaches, especially when evaluating foreign players or transferring domestic ones.
The above report attempted to analyze six major areas including tactics, finance, sporting results, league position, governance, and risk. But all six returned empty results. For instance, when analyzing a player like Nguyen Quang Hai, experts cannot know his number of key passes, distance covered, or defensive efficiency at his new club Cong An Ha Noi. Every assessment becomes mere speculation.
The issue is not limited to professional clubs. Even the national team, with its achievements at SEA Games and Asian Cup, still lacks a centralized data system to support the head coach in player selection and tactical arrangement. Rivals like Thailand, Japan or South Korea have established modern analytical centers for years. Therefore, when facing them, they almost know all weaknesses of each Vietnamese player.
The question arises: Does Vietnam really lack data, or is the data scattered and lacking connection? In fact, many youth football academies in Vietnam have equipped GPS devices and cameras to record every training session. But very few numbers are made public or shared with experts. This is the bottleneck of information governance, not a lack of technology.
If clubs keep data private, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) cannot build a full picture. This lack of transparency also makes it difficult for fans and the press to challenge decisions made by coaching staff. When a team performs poorly, criticism often carries heavy emotion because there are no numbers to distinguish right from wrong.
The report also warns that if not addressed, Vietnamese football will lag behind in the region. The immediate solution is for V.League to establish a mandatory data standard. In each match, sports data providers must be allowed to operate publicly, and basic metrics such as possession, pass counts, and shots should be published after the game. This is not too costly but will provide the foundation for any deep analysis.
Furthermore, youth training must record development profiles of each player from U11 to U23. Height, weight, growth rate, athletic indicators through each season... all should be stored properly. These data will help make selection more objective instead of picking players based on a coach's whim.
The deadlock of an analysis report is an opportunity for reflection. Without data, every praise and criticism is meaningless. Fans need to demand transparency, organizers need to provide information, and experts need a common standard. Only then can Vietnamese football develop sustainably, not purely on luck or momentary inspiration.
Finally, treat this blank report as a wake-up call. Success on the pitch will only be beautiful moments if there is no solid data system behind it. It is time for everyone to sit together and set a long-term roadmap for building a national football database. This is not just VFF's story, but a story for all who love football in Vietnam.
