Vietnamese Volleyball and the Empty Data File: What Goes Unmeasured Stays Unseen
11:40 p.m. I opened the statistics file I had been handed for a post-match report. The perfect-pass column was empty. The attack-efficiency column was empty. The blocks-per-set column was empty. No team names, no match date, no score, not even the name of a competition. At the bottom, one line remained: insufficient information for analysis.
I stared at that sheet longer than necessary. Based on my own experience watching matches across domestic competitions and VTV Cup editions, I know that most of the time I have to tally the numbers by hand, because few matches are recorded well enough to be read again. Once I wrote that from an old position chart I could see an entire world belonging to one player. This time the emptiness opened no world, but it said something fairly clear about Vietnamese volleyball.
This sport can measure almost anything. Under FIVB rules, volleyball moved to rally scoring in 2026, so a single failed reception stopped being a small matter. The libero role arrived in the late 1990s and turned the back row into a specialism of its own. The women's net stands at 2.24 m, the men's at 2.43 m; each team gets a maximum of three touches and rotates through six positions, and every rotation contains at least one configuration with only two attackers in the front row. That is a structural weak point every opponent knows how to attack. To read a match properly, an analyst needs the perfect-pass rate, the side-out rate, the number of out-of-system attacks, position-by-position efficiency, blocks per set, and the balance between service winners and service errors. Without those numbers, a judgement is just a feeling wearing confident clothes.
In Vietnam, the competition calendar is not thin. The national indoor championship covers both men and women, alongside traditional cups, a youth system and invitational international events such as the VTV Cup. The women's national team is tied to the two-year SEA Games cycle, plus the Asian Games and continental qualifiers. The gap sits in the recording layer. After most matches, what remains is a scoreboard, a few photographs and short commentary. There is no file to open again.
The consequence is concrete. Fans judge an attacker by the points she scores. Those points do not say who passed the serve so she could attack from a good position, whether she scored inside or outside the system, or whether the block in front of her was strong or soft. An outside hitter with 20 points against a good blocking team may have played better than one with 25 points against a loose block. Without data, the two are placed side by side as equals.
I usually run a nine-layer map for every match I follow, and today's empty file showed me exactly where that map has holes. The first layer is tactics: the reception system, how well the personnel fit the system of play, how rotations are managed. The second is data: metric definitions must be consistent, the sample must be large enough, and results must be adjusted for opponent strength. Then comes the competition structure, where a dense V.League calendar, a SEA Games every two years and long flights drain the same bodies at the same time.
The later layers are harder. A team's standing depends on talent flow, and here Vietnam shows both encouraging signals and gaps. Several Vietnamese women's attackers, Trần Thị Thanh Thúy among them, have gone to play in Japan, evidence that individual quality can compete in a foreign league. But when the best players leave, the domestic league loses the quality matches it needs to measure itself, and that is precisely when data is most needed and thinnest.
The rules and governance layer decides who plays and when, through registration, transfer and disciplinary regulations. During a transfer window, the loudest noise usually comes from rumours, while the things that actually shape a season sit in contract clauses and payroll. A transfer is a contract being bought. I only want to write about what a player carries through the door: technical foundation, age, load tolerance and fit with a new system. None of those four appear in a headline, but all four appear in data.
In the final layer, the industry chain runs from youth development to the professional league to broadcasting and the commercial market. That chain breaks in the middle more often than people think. A young attacker is pushed to a satellite club, plays a few minutes, disappears from the statistics, disappears from the roster, disappears from memory. There are players who do not need a spotlight. They only need someone to sit down and record them for a long time. But nobody records, so their story ends where nobody reads.
This is the counter-intuitive part, and I will say it plainly. The conventional reading is right: strong teams beat weak teams, taller attackers block better, teams with more national-team players win more often. There is nothing to overturn there. What gets overturned sits in the technology of dispute. The video challenge system does not reduce disagreement; it moves disagreement from the court to a screen and into the grey zone of the rulebook, where a foot touching a line, an arm brushing the net or half a ball touching the floor is enough to change a result. The more data there is, the finer the line of argument becomes.
That emptiness is bigger than one late-night technical error. Vietnamese volleyball has good players, real competitions and real audiences, but it does not yet have a public data layer to match. To go further on the continental stage, the first and cheapest step is to build a place where every touch is stored, so that ten years from now it can still be opened and read.
Close to two in the morning, I still owe women's volleyball a chapter I have not written. That chapter begins with a pass nobody counted, and it ends somewhere data, fortunately, still cannot replace a person.
