When the VPF announced the new regulation allowing clubs to register and use 4 foreign players simultaneously instead of 3, the entire tactical map of the V-League 2026/27 was redrawn. No longer a story of one or two big clubs, this year's championship race features at least five formidable contenders: CAHN, The Cong Viettel, Hanoi FC, Ninh Binh, and Thép Xanh Nam Dinh. Among them, CAHN enters the season as the number one candidate following a 2-0 win over Adelaide United in the C1 Cup playoff and the National Super Cup title. The V-League 2026/27 kicks off on September 4, 2026, with the opening match between Dong Nai and The Cong Viettel, alongside a notable clash between CA TP.HCM and Hanoi FC. The new foreign player regulation is the biggest change: each club can register up to 4 foreign players and use all 4 simultaneously on the pitch; clubs participating in Asian competitions can register up to 7 foreigners. This opens opportunities for financially strong clubs to build a foreign "backbone" stretching from goalkeeper to striker, but simultaneously poses a difficult financial puzzle for smaller clubs. Tactically, the 4-foreigner rule is the most consequential variable of the season. Increasing from 3 to 4 simultaneous foreign players fundamentally changes how clubs build their squads. A club can now field an entire foreign spine: goalkeeper, center-back, central midfielder, and striker. This not only threatens the league's competitiveness but also raises questions about the sustainability of Vietnamese football as a whole. I have followed many Southeast Asian leagues, and the lesson from the Thai League is clear: without financial fair play rules, big clubs get richer while small clubs gradually disappear. Similarly, VPF's decision to increase foreign players is a contract with the entire football community, and its consequences cannot be undone. Without protective barriers, we may witness one or two clubs teetering on the brink of bankruptcy mid-season, forcing VPF to intervene urgently and damaging the league's integrity.
